Description
The English name of the Sabal palm (saw palmetto), which grows wild in the southern parts of the United States, comes from the jagged petioles that resemble a saw. Its lifespan is as long as 700 years, and it is resistant to drought, insects and fires. Blue-black berries, which are harvested in August and September, have medicinal properties. Picking sabal palm fruits is a double risk: pickers can easily injure themselves on the razor-sharp teeth of the petioles, and rattlesnakes like to nest in the shade of that plant.
